Wild Wednesday: Wild horse behavior. A herd of wil Wild Wednesday: Wild horse behavior. A herd of wild horses will all start running for several reasons. They might sense a predator or an incoming storm. Sometimes they will hear a loud noise like a gunshot. Often it is very simply because one horse get a burst of energy like the little colt at the beginning of the video. He set off the entire Pryor horse running. So fun to watch them being wild and free like it should be. Pryor Mountain Montana

Mare Monday: A sweet video of mare Adeer grooming Mare Monday: A sweet video of mare Adeer grooming her son Rajah. Born in the winter of 1998, Adeer came to RTF in the spring of 1999 when she was just a foal after her herd from Hart Mountain were rounded up. They were gathered on horseback so we were able to keep the family bands intact.
Adeer was one of the lucky ones who was able to grow up in a natural herd community made up of various family and bachelor bands. Another young colt named Freedom was also lucky and he and Adeer grew up playing in the hills at Refurn to Freedom’s American Wild Horse Sanctuary - after Freedom roamed in a bachelor band, Adeer became his lead mare!
Many of tne Hart Mountain horses , and especially Adeer and Freedom, possess the baroque phenotype of the early Spanish Barb horses that entered American in the 1600’s.
Adeer is a beautiful bay mahogany roan mare with black tipped ears, broadly placed eyes, thick wavy mane and tail.
Over the years Adeer had a few foals —- the fertility control vaccine in non hormonal immunity contraception and therefore not all
mares respond to it and Adeer is what we call a non- responder.
Her magnificent stallion Freedom has passed away. Besides Rajah she also has two other colts at the sanctuary who carry on Freedom’s legacy; sons Barack and Viggo.
She travels with Barack’s band and has kept a bonded relationship with Barack and Raj.

It was a good day @flagisupfarms for The Movement. It was a good day @flagisupfarms for The Movement.

Reconnected with my friend Roberto Dutesco who was the original and sole photographer to document the Sable Island Wild Horses for over 30 years. Over the years we have worked together in a few public venues alongside his magnificent installations. The 500 horses that live on that island survive the harsh elements without completion for survival against predators or any grazing livestock- they are hardy and happy … i love his work because you can really see the extreme habitat, the bonds and relationships between the horses and their sense of humor! Yes their playful humor! @dutesco @iamwildinc -
@monty_roberts

RTF was invited to speak about our work and there was a demo with two of RTFs #spanishmustangs Opal and Sage who are slowly progressing in being handled, becoming more trusting.

They have been there for gentling and we are hoping to find the right humans with the right horse friendly environment to adopt these beautiful #spanishmustang mares.

We rarely have horses available for adoption but we do currently have 14 horses that would do better where they can enjoy more human attention!

You can visit our website and under the dropdown Our Horses there is an Adopt tab. - or- see Linktree in our Profile!

We have a strict adoption policy and application process so if you are interested please look it over.

Throw Back Thursday: Little Harlow was born April Throw Back Thursday: Little Harlow was born April 25, 2022 at our Lompoc, Calif., headquarters sanctuary. Her mom Willow, a mare with roots in the Sulphur Herd Management Area in Utah, and Amante, a rare Cerbat stallion from Arizona. She has become such a beautiful and confident mare and still loves poeple.
Our sanctuary uses non-hormonal fertility control to allow stations and mares to live together in family bands while responsibly managing our numbers (Harlow is our second foal this year from among more than 450 wild horses and burros).
Some mares are non-responders to fertility control. Willow is somewhere in between, having had three foals in her 19 years.

We are fighting hard to make sure that future generations will be able to see wild horses running free on our public lands.

Join us as we stand up for the future of wild horses in Wyoming and across the West!

@ReturntoFreedom, @FrontRangeEquinRescue and photographers @MegFrederickphotography and @AngeliqueRea continue litigation to stop the illegal roundups of wild horses from the Checkerboard area of Wyoming and the stripping of 2 million acres of public land from wild horse use.

We need ongoing resources to continue our best efforts to protect the Checkerboard, but we need your support.

In 2020 Misun, his family and larger herd community were rounded up and removed from their home range in Wyoming’s Red Desert. Thanks to photographers @megfrederickphotography and @angeliquerea , we were able to find Misun’s harem mares (and their foals born in holding), his mother, sister and brother - who all stayed together on the range- and reunite them !

Safe now - Happy Father’s Day Misun!

Everyday all day it’s Foal Fun Day! In Decembe Everyday all day it’s Foal Fun Day!

In December @returntofreedom jumped in to help keep stallions and their families safe from the road to the slaughter house in Mexico. With @allseatedinabarn doing the initial heavy lifting at the auction in Texasand support including identifying the horses and bands from @srwhmg and support from many people to pay auction fees , veterinary care , quarantine, pasture board l, care and feed all winter and transport —- 46 horses were saved! With babies on board it is now 53.

Now in California, five mares have foaled healthy foals and it looks like 1 more is on the way! (unfortunately Princess Lea was born 1-2 months prenatal didn’t make it in the end).

Two more foals were born while the horses were in Texas so we are waiting for them to mature abit more before making the long haul.

“Dahlia and Cassidy”

Dahlia (on the left) affectionately touches her son, Cassidy, who looks over his shoulder in my direction.  Dahlia was rounded up off of public land by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) along with her 3 month old foal Rose, who was taken from her after the round up.  Cassidy was born in the BLM holding corrals at Canon City, Colorado.  These two, along with other members of their family band now live at Return to Freedom on a sanctuary in San Luis Obispo, roaming free.

The process of putting family bands back together can be tedious and time consuming, but RTF works hard to reunite as many as they can.  Sanctuaries often work together, as they did in the case of this family, slowly moving them to their forever home, while allowing them to get their health back, and allowing the foals to get bigger before moving them the longer distances.  The mares were skeletons when they were rescued from the holding corrals in 2022.  They look fabulous and healthy now.

Join us at a future Return to Freedom Photo Safari to see and photograph these horses in a natural herd environment.

🔴 Learn more and take action! — The Bureau of 🔴 Learn more and take action! — The Bureau of Land Management today posted an updated schedule of its plans to permanently remove 10,444 wild horses and burros from our public lands from April 1-Oct. 30.

By comparison, the BLM plans to treat with fertility control and then release just 209 mares back onto the range.

Congress must demand that the BLM immediately begin the transition to safe, proven and humane fertility control as its main management tool in order to keep America’s wild horses and burros on the range, where they belong.

YOU CAN HELP: Tap Take Action in our profile to send a letter to your members of Congress.

➡️ The BLM must implement fertility control to stabilize herd growth so that removals, which decimate family bands and herds, can be brought to an end, and off-range holding, which costs millions of dollars more each year with less and less space for captured horses, phased out.

Lawmakers have begun providing funding for fertility control to slow herd growth, and its use now enjoys both strong public and broad stakeholder support.

Yet, the BLM maintains it will use fertility control only after it reaches the low, arbitrary population targets, called “Appropriate Management Levels,” which it has set for itself.

The agency’s history shows remaining fixated only on capture-and-removal management will not succeed. Population modeling by ecologists shows that, too.

The BLM’s goal is to reach a combined Appropriate Management Level of no more than 26,785 total wild horses and burros in 10 Western states.

The agency estimated that 73,520 were living on the public rangelands it manages as of March 1.

Most captured wild horses will end up alongside more than 64,000 warehoused in government facilities, 23,000 of them in often overcrowded corrals.
